Prvenstvena naloga in poslanstvo ZDUS je povezovanje in sodelovanje s predstavniki izvršilne in zakonodajne oblasti v zasledovanju strateških ciljev za boljši in vsestranski položaj upokojencev. Na lokalni ravni pa morajo društva upokojencev uresničevati svoje konkretne programe za potrebe upokojencev, kjer vsakdo lahko najde nekaj tudi zase.
